HuntonBrady & Disney Imagineers Design Florida Hospital Lobby
March 12, 2010– Florida Hospital teamed with Walt Disney World Resort and Disney World Outreach in 2007 to become the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children in downtown Orlando. Together with local architect HuntonBrady Architects, and help from a few beloved Disney characters, the Disney Imagineers recently unveiled a renovation of the hospital’s lobby into a new three-story interactive space that can only be described as…well, magical.
The new exterior shell and interior immersive environment that HuntonBrady Architects & Disney Imagineering designed incorporates familiar Disney characters, including Timon and Pumba from “The Lion King,” Baloo from “The Jungle Book” and Sebastian and Flounder from “The Little Mermaid, to comfort and welcome pediatric patients and their families. The hospital lobby features many hallmarks of Disney design including bright color, sounds and light. It’s a special place designed to make children feel like they are stepping into a Disney theme park or film.
Interactive exhibits allow visitors to:
- Draw individual markings on a cave wall,
- Generate jungle sounds on musical step pads,
- Fish for virtual salmon
Renovation of the hospital will continue and new units will open in 2011, with concepts, colors, sounds and themes inspired from the lobby applied throughout the entire children’s hospital.
