The University of Florida Genetics and Cancer Research Center and Biotechnical Laboratory, a LEED Certified project, is a multi-disciplinary institution that allows a diverse group of scientists to work together. The 280,000 gsf structure is an outstanding example of how precast concrete can be used for long-term green, sustainable building outcomes. Precast concrete allowed for efficient material use, a reduction in construction waste and site disturbance, improved energy efficiency, improved indoor environmental quality and reduced noise. An extensive Life Cycle Analysis was preformed to equate the reduction in raw materials, energy, construction waste and labor created by using a brick-inlaid architectural precast system versus using full bed depth brick. Brick inlay precast wall panels accelerated the construction schedule and allowed the contractor to install all fenestration systems earlier.
