Volusia County Residents Have More Options for Cancer Care with New Memorial Medical Cancer Institute

February 8, 2010 —HuntonBrady Architects was selected to provide architecture and interior design services for the new Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Cancer Institute in Daytona Beach. The one-story, 32,000 square foot freestanding outpatient Cancer Institute will be located at 224 Memorial Medical Parkway beside the new Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center hospital, also designed by HuntonBrady. The Cancer Center broke ground for construction on January 28 and is scheduled to open in October 2010.

“We designed the new Cancer Institute with a clean organized approach, patient comfort, modern lines, and an efficient layout, in conjunction with the Owner. The building will have its own unique identity, but still complement the architecture of the new hospital and bring cohesion to the new Memorial medical campus,” said Project Manager Chris Dunlop of HuntonBrady Architects.

The building design is organized around a day lit main lobby and relaxing reception area, which connects the Chapel, Patient Education Services, Radiation Oncology Treatment Center, Research & Administration, Medical Oncology Physician Suites, and the Infusion Center. A dramatic cylindrical rooftop element provides an iconic element to the building, making its new identity visible to travelers on I-95.

Of particular importance to the Architects and Owner was the patient Infusion Center, where patients can sit for extended periods of time while receiving chemotherapy. HuntonBrady Architects designed the Infusion Center for the optimal location onsite to emphasize peaceful views to nature. It features floor to ceiling glass windows that overlook a pond and wetland landscape. Evidence-based healthcare design has shown that daylight and views of nature are beneficial to patients and staff, and can help speed the healing process.

The project’s civil engineer is KlimaWeeks, structural engineer is BBM Inc, MEP engineer is TLC (Jacksonville),  landscape architect  is HHI Design, and contractor is Robins & Morton.

Other significant healthcare work by HuntonBrady Architects includes Florida Hospital Orlando Patient Tower, the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson. Modern Healthcare named HuntonBrady one of the Top 30 healthcare design architects in the nation (2009). They are an award-winning architecture and interior design firm that provides services to public and private clients, including healthcare, education, commercial office, religious and municipal projects.
